It is clear that Kickstarter, the crowd-source funding platform, is having a tremendous impact on the funding scene in general and disruptive innovation in specific.
One of the key challenges in fundraising for many innovation companies is that much VC and Angel investment has become very profile-driven. There are certain types of products, technologies, and services that are deemed attractive or sexy at a given time. If you do not fall within the conventional wisdom of the moment as to what it sexy, then finding funding can be very difficult indeed.
Kickstarter and some its up and coming rivals/follow-ons are at least making some in-roads in busting up the somewhat herd mentality that has developed in the start-up funding environment. And that is a “Good, Good, Thing!”
